The Simhastha is a long festival with many auspicious days, not only the Amrit Snans. Choosing a less crowded day means a calmer darshan and a safer snan.

The process of fixing the muhurtas

The question of who fixes the dates of Simhastha is asked again and again. In practice the process does not belong to one body but is carried out through dialogue among many. The local priests' associations and almanac makers work out the calculations of the planetary positions. Representatives of the Akhada Parishad and the mahants (heads of akhadas) accept those calculations and put forward the views of their akhadas. The state government, the divisional commissioner, the police and the Kumbh Mela Authority finalise the schedule with an eye on facilities and security. This meeting usually happens a few years before the fair. The media have reported that the state government announced the schedule for the coming Simhastha in the presence of sadhus, mahants and the Chief Minister. In the same announcement it was also said that the days of Ekadashi, Purnima, Amavasya and the Vaidhriti-Vyatipat yogas would be counted as parvani and darshan days.
